4 Tips to Skip Impulsive Social Media Shopping

Oct 26, 2022
Do you find yourself scrolling through social media platforms and an ad catches your eye every time? Between ads and influencers on social media, you may find yourself buying products that you didn’t know you needed. With a few helpful tips, you can modify your spending habits to save more in your budget.

Set Limits

In 2019 and 2020, U.S. Consumers spent up to 3 hours per day on a variety of social media platforms. Setting a limit for time you spend on different apps can play a huge role in the exposure you’ll have and the temptations of possible purchases. Many newer phones let you set time limits on phone usage and for specific apps.

Use Money Management

Through online banking, our money management tool connects you to your loans, deposits, and investments elsewhere. With this tool, you can also set up monthly cash flow and budgets. It’s okay to splurge occasionally, but setting a budget or limit of how much you are spending a month can be a great option to ensure you are not overspending on purchases.

Declutter

According to research, you’re more likely to make a purchase when you’re sitting in a disorganized room compared to a tidy room. Take time to declutter and tidy up your home, office, or both! Doing this, you may realize how much “stuff” you really have and rethink making purchases for more.

Wait, “Do I really need this?”

Most online purchases are unplanned and influenced by social media. If you slow down and make yourself wait before purchasing, you may realize you would not have as big of a use for the item than you thought you did an hour ago. When you see something you want, add it to your cart and walk away. Take some time and come back to it.

Shopping on social media does save a lot of time, rather than having to get out and shop. On the other hand, you must be careful how frequently you are making those convenient purchases.
