10 Tips to Save on Groceries

Mar 17, 2021

When looking at your budget and trying to decide where you can save money, groceries are probably not at the top of your list. Food is essential and cutting back on it isn’t an option, right? While you can’t cut out groceries from your budget completely, there are ways to save on your grocery bill. Below we’ll give you 10 tips for saving on your next grocery run.

1. Make a plan before you shop

Try to plan out your meals for the week before you go to the store. This way, you’ll have an idea of what types of ingredients you’ll need and won’t over-shop for things that you may not need.

2. Stick to the list

Make a detailed list for your grocery trip. Once you enter the store, try to stick to your list as closely as possible. With a list, you won’t forget important items, and you’ll be less tempted to grab those impulse buys.

3. Buy generic

We all have our loyalties to certain brands, but buying generic can save you a lot of money. Just by buying generic brands of kitchen staples like salt, sugar and flour will add up to more savings in your wallet.

4. Use those coupons

Whether you cut coupons from the paper or use the grocery store’s app to save digital coupons, using coupons will help you save money on your groceries. Just remember – if you don’t need it, don’t buy it! Don’t use a coupon just because it’s a good deal.

5. Buy in bulk

Bulk prices may seem higher at the time, but if you buy more now, it’ll save you trips to the store later. Keep in mind that stocking up on items in bulk is smart, as long as you can use items before their expiration.

6. Skip the pre-packaged convenience items

While having pre-cut fruits and veggies is convenient, you’re paying a price for those pre-cut and pre-packaged produce items. Chop and cut your produce yourself and save money in the process.

7. Check out your fridge and pantry

Before going to the store, take inventory of what you already have in your fridge and pantry. This will help you avoid buying things you already have. And while you’re at it, see if there are any items you already have on hand that you can use for a meal. Do you already have salsa, ground beef and tortillas? Sounds like a taco night is in your future!

8. Shop in season

Seasonal produce is less expensive because the cost of shipping isn’t included to shipping it to your area. For example, strawberries are usually cheaper in early summer when they’re in season. You’ll get fresher produce that tastes better when you buy in season.

9. Don’t shop on an empty stomach

You’ve probably heard this before, but it’s worth repeating. When you’re hungry, you’re more likely to be tempted to grab that bag of chips or carton of ice cream because you’re craving a snack. Walk into the store with a full stomach and avoid those impulse buys!

10. Use a grocery delivery or pick up service

Using a delivery or pick up service for your grocery shopping can help you save on grocery costs. You’ll be able to see exactly how much you’re spending as you add items to your cart, and you’re more likely to stick to your list.  Some services or grocery stores may charge a small fee, so make sure you include that into your budget. A bonus of using this method is saving time – just select your items for your order, then swing by the store for quick pick up or wait at home until it’s delivered without spending an hour in the store.

Grocery shopping is something we all have to do. Using these tips can help you save money on your groceries and keep more money in your pocket.
